I grew up in the sixties in a small town in the central parts of New Jersey.  Third child of four, life was pretty good as I knew it.  My best friend, Steve, lived right across the street.  I was nine years old in the summer of 1967 and I was usually could be found swimming over at Steve’s house.  His Uncle Pat would often drive his 1963 Corvette Stingray over when he came to visit.  I loved seeing his car in the driveway, it was such a cool car!   Steve’s mother, Mrs. P., was quite a vibriant woman and she would often let us do things around her house that my mom would never let us. We called her the ‘colorful’ mom. She would often get us colored popcorn and let us watch her color TV. I think she had the first one in the neighborhood!

The rare and one of a kind 1963 split window coupe.

One day Uncle Pat left his Corvette in the hands of Steve’s mom and she needed to go to Sears, then called Sears & Roebuck. Man, were we in luck that day! Well Mrs. P. told Steve and I to get into the Corvette so we can go to Sears.  Now Corvettes only ever had 2 seats, had only 2 of them back then and still do today!  One for the driver and one for the passenger.  That was not going to stop Mrs. P. from going where she wanted to go…with us boys, of course.  She strapped both of us in the passenger seat with the lap seat belt and away we went in the dark blue 1963 Corvette Stingray!  WoW!  What a thrill! This was my first ride ever in a Corvette and I LOVED IT!

Now Mrs. P. was not known to drive any car slow and the ’63 Corvette Stingray was no different to her!  She barreled on to the nearby highway and I can remember this as if it were yesterday!  We stopped at a red light and she said, “Hold on boys, I’m going to show you what this Corvette can really do!”  She started reving the engine, the light turned green and away we went!  FAST!  Then FASTER in second gear…then FASTER in third gear!  Oh Boy!  What a fantastic ride we had.  What a thrill I got out of that first ride in a 1963 Corvette Stingray.  I will never forget that day and I have loved Corvettes and DREAMED of owning them ever since.
